My Three Favourite Star Trek Starship Classes! By Daniel Paterson

Cheyyene Class Vessel

The Cheyenne Class of Starship is a direct descendant of the Constellation Class of Starship. Having been referred to as a 24th Century update of its predecessor, the Cheyenne follows the design lineage of its sister classes, the Nebula and Galaxy and also its cousin, the New Orleans Class which created systems which were later used on the Cheyenne class.

The initial project brief was for a replacement for the now aged Constellation Class which first entered service some sixty years before. Starfleet Command was estimating that all Constellation Class ships would be decommissioned by the late 2360's and as such a replacement fleet of Cheyenne class ships would need to be ready to take over the role of these decommissioned ships.

The Cheyenne Class was to be capable of heavy cargo transportation and towing missions on top of the normal roles of its class (Diplomatic and patrol functions). In addition though the class also needed to follow its sister classes with the ability to protect itself to a high standard and also the ability to separate into a saucer and drive section.

The Cheyenne Class employs four warp nacelles to generate the powerful warp field necessary for warp speed cargo transport and towing missions. Fed by a single Type I MARA core the ship is capable of extending its warp field around an object of approximately the same size as itself. Using a progressive warp generation field, the Cheyenne class can control its warp factor with extreme precision and hence it makes towing vessels / large objects much easier. In addition the is a forced Replusor/Tractor emitter located on its aft hull which acts a buffer between the object in tow and the ship.

The Cheyenne on its defensive classification, is slight more advanced than the New Orleans class, which in launch lineage, was its direct predecessor. The order in which this batch of designs were launched determined the technological advances which could be incorporated into the ship. Starting from the earliest this is which ships were launched.

Prometeus Class Vessel
The Prometheus Class was designed as a battle ship. Its design resembles that of the Intrepid Class but also incorporates four engine nacelles. It is far superior to any other federation ship in the area of combat. Its engines are capable of out-running any other federation vessel and its features the latest advances in Starfleet weapons technology. Its new high-powered 14x type XII phasers are capable of penetrating Federation shields, and it is equipped with auto-modulated high capacity regenerative shielding system.

One new feature in Federation technology is the multi-vector assault system. This system allows the ship to separate into three sections, each capable of warp drive and independent operation. The three sections are the saucer, the upper secondary hull, and the lower secondary hull. Each half of the secondary hull has two warp nacelles while a single nacelle emerges from the top of the saucer during separated flight. The saucer nacelle is visible in the picture above. This system allows the ship to attack one target from three points, making it more difficult for the target to destroy the ship.

The Prometheus Class is still in the testing stages and Starfleet has yet to announce the future of the Prometheus Class.

Sovereign Class Vessel
The Sovereign Class project began when Starfleet wanted a new class of ship to replace the 10 year old Galaxy Class as the flagship of the Federation. The Sovereign is capable of very high warp speeds, in excess of warp 9.98, and is extremely agile for a ship of its size.

The Sovereign Class ships are equipped with powerful phaser arrays and quantum torpedo launchers. They are also equipped by Starfleet's new double-redundant quick-charging shields. This new shielding system builds a back-buffer shield in addition to the primary shield. When sufficient damage is taken to the primary shield, the back buffer is phased through to replace the primary while it is recharged within the protection of the new primary. This new system consumes a good deal of energy, which is supplied by half a dozen fusion reactors arrayed near the shield emitters.

The design of the ship is a combination of the many designs over the years in the history of Starfleet. The ship has the streamline design of the Excelsior Class, a similar saucer to that of the Intrepid Class, the appearance of the Galaxy Class.

The Sovereign Class was commissioned into service in 2371.
